Louisiana is stepping into a new era of education. By 2027, every school in the state will be required to teach financial literacy - a critical step toward preparing students for real-world success.
But compliance alone isn’t enough; our children deserve financial education that begins early, feels familiar, and connects to their everyday lives.
That’s why we created Lark & Mimi™, a Louisiana-based, early learning financial literacy program designed to build money confidence and critical thinking skills through storytelling, play, and exploration.
Why Start Early?
Research shows that a child’s financial habits begin forming by age 5. Lark & Mimi Learn to Save helps children ages 3–6 understand basic money concepts - earning, saving, sharing, and spending - through fun, hands-on experiences that align with Louisiana Early Learning Domains 4 (Cognition), 5 (Social-Emotional Development), and 6 (Approaches to Learning).
The program introduces STEM principles in a playful, developmentally appropriate way, encouraging:
-
Counting and number recognition
-
Sorting and pattern observation
-
Goal setting and basic problem-solving
-
Real-world application through games and storytelling
Locally Relevant, Family-Centered Learning
Financial literacy should reflect the lives of Louisiana families - their traditions, stories, and community values. Lark & Mimi connects money lessons to experiences children recognize: saving coins, helping family, and setting small goals that lead to big dreams.
Each classroom kit includes:
-
A coloring and activity book
-
An illustrated storybook featuring Lark and Mimi
-
Financial vocabulary flashcards
-
A DIY piggy bank kit
-
A sticker reward system
-
Family engagement materials that bring lessons home
The Lark & Mimi™ program is designed for Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms, Head Start centers, and family engagement events.
We partner with schools, banks, and community organizations to ensure every child - regardless of school budget - has access to early financial education.
Through bank CRA partnerships, Title funds, and local foundation support, Lark & Mimi™ provides ready-to-use classroom kits that integrate seamlessly into early learning environments.
Our goal is to make Louisiana the national model for early childhood financial literacy education.
When children learn the value of saving, sharing, and setting goals, they build the foundation for lifelong success - academically, financially, and emotionally.
The ripple effects extend beyond classrooms, shaping stronger families and more financially confident communities.
