Coming Late 2026
Marie Couvent’s legacy is one of resilience, faith, and vision. Born into slavery in Saint-Domingue, she fought her way to freedom and later became one of the most influential free women of color in New Orleans. In the early 19th century, she founded the city’s first free school for Black children, planting seeds of education and opportunity in a world determined to deny them both.
Yet, her story has been overshadowed, forgotten, and in many ways, dishonored. This book uncovers the truth about how promises made to preserve her vision were neglected, erasing her name from the very institution she built.
Through historical research, personal reflection, and a reckoning with the past, this book restores Marie Couvent to her rightful place in history. It is both a biography and a call to remember, the story of a woman whose faith and determination shaped generations, and whose legacy still challenges us to confront injustice today.
